Sriperumbudur-Oragadam corridor is buzzing with opportunities

Nokia

Oragadam is set to witness a grand reopening! Salcomp India, a major supplier of iPhone chargers and components to Apple, is gearing up to reopen Nokia’s Sriperumbudur plant. The facility, one of the largest in India, had remained closed since 2014 and was acquired by Salcomp only last year.

Investment and workforce addition

Despite the pandemic, the Sriperumbudur – Oragadam industrial belt is buzzing with activity and opportunities.  Salcomp will invest Rs 1300 crores in the next few years and the majority of these funds will be used for purchasing new plants and machinery. Salcomp India currently employs about 8,000 workers, nearly 1000 of them were added after the lockdown was lifted. Interestingly 85 percent of its workforce consists of women. Salcomp will be hiring 5,000 more by the end of 2021 and intends to add another 5,000.

The action is not limited to Salcomp. The other companies in the news include Daimler India’s expansion of its commercial vehicle manufacturing at its Oragdam factory and Rs 900 crores investment by Japan’s Polymatech Electronics to make semiconductor chips at the SIPCOT industrial park.

Earlier this year, Foxconn started assembling Apple’s premium iPhone 11 at its Sriperumbudur facility.  The company will also pump in $ 1billion over the next three years to expand capacity.

Meanwhile, Yotta Infrastructure, part of the Hiranandani Group, announced its plans to set up a data center park on a 13-acre campus at Hiranandani Parks. It will invest more than Rs 3000 crores over the next eight years. The first data center building with a built-up area of 230,000 square feet is expected to be ready by the last quarter of 2021.
