Apple begins making iPhone 14 in Oragadam, marking a shift in its manufacturing strategy

Foxconn

Oragadam, one of India’s biggest manufacturing hubs has added a new feather to its crown. Apple’s main iPhone assembler, Foxconn located in the Sriperumbudur – Oragadam belt has started producing its latest model here for the first time. The unit has been manufacturing iPhones at Oragadam since 2017 but these were usually older models.

Over the last few years, Oragadam has seen a large number of international companies setting up their manufacturing units here. This has led to an increase in residential developments in this area. One township that stands tall in Oragadam is Hiranandani Parks. The 360-acre sports-themed green township is home to luxurious 2.5 & 3 BHK apartments that suits the needs of today’s family. The township also has premium plug-and-play mode plots in different sizes for those who wish to create their own dream home. Well connected by road and rail, the township is located between Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road and NH4. It is just an hour’s drive from the Chennai International airport and a half an hour drive from the proposed international airport at Parandur. The Tamil Nadu government’s Rs. 300 crore Oragadam Industrial Corridor road will further enhance connectivity to the township.

Oragadam, the new iPhone manufacturing hub

Apple will turn Oragadam into a global iPhone manufacturing hub by 2025, say, industry analysts, as it slowly cuts its reliance on China, where it has been producing the vast majority of its devices. Apple will move 5% of global iPhone 14 production to Oragadam by late 2022 and expand its manufacturing capacity in the country to produce 25% of all iPhones by 2025.

Oragadam has attracted investments from Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn in recent years by offering lucrative subsidies, The presence of the foreign production giants, coupled with ample labor resources and competitive labor costs make Oragadam a desirable location.

Apart from selling the India-produced phones locally, Apple will also export them to other markets globally.
